Alongside the bin for general waste, consumers are also provided with another (second) collection system for packaging waste: the ‘dual system’. Packaging manufacturers and distributors pay for this system. Rules about the system are set out in the German Packaging Act (VerpackG).
The ‘dual system’ is therefore the technical term for the collection system used for packaging waste in Germany.
In addition, however, the private-sector companies that organise the disposal and recycling processes for packaging waste are also referred to as dual systems.
